THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH'S SUDBURY

Thursday 05 November 2026
19:30 to 21:00

In the mid-18th century, Sudbury was a thriving market town where Thomas Gainsborough spent his formative years, deeply influenced by its surrounding water meadows and woodlands.  He attended Sudbury Grammar School before embarking on an illustrious career as a portrait painter but depicting the Suffolk landscapes he loved so much, always gave him greater satisfaction. In his talk, local historian Ashley Cooper will explore the town that provided Thomas Gainsborough with both artistic inspiration and his early clientele.
