THE DE VERES & BURES CHAPEL
Thursday 02 July 2026
19:30 to 23:00
On the opposing hillside to the famous Bures Dragon outside the village of Bures lies St. Stephen's Chapel. Built by a local landowner, Gilbert de Tawny, it is renowned for two reasons. Firstly it is believed to be on the very spot where King Edmund was crowned on Christmas Day 855AD. Secondly, it houses the tombs of three Earls of Oxford. And it is the story of how they came to be here that is the subject of tonight's talk by local historian, Jan Cole.
